How Long Are We Going to Let the Media Bait Us Into Panic?
Updated: Mar 15, 2020
Is COVID-19 a big deal? Yes. Should we be concerned? Yes. Should we abandon all common sense? No.
So here we are. We are in unprecedented times with the entire country being on red-alert with the realization that the COVID-19 virus is not going away anytime soon and in fact is realistically just getting started. So, it would be fitting that with a potential global pandemic and international emergency brewing that most Americans would completely ditch any concept of rational thought and fall into complete panic and act ludicrously out of touch with reality. P.S. this is going to be a rant......so bravely hunker down for the ride..... or turn back now.
I don't get it. Seriously, what is wrong with people? Have we over the course of time not moved past the point of mindless panic? It's a shame that whenever an issue of mass concern presents itself we resort to the same methods of selfishness. We've all seen the pictures of the toilet paper shelves at Walmart empty. And really who needs six weeks of toilet paper? Do these folks have 6 weeks worth of food to require this? Probably not, but it's easiest to over value basic items and place a value on them that's high enough that we ought over purchase effectively taking away a resource that others may need. Bottled water, since when did we get too good that we couldn't drink tap water? Unless, of course, you are in Flint, MI....but that's a whole different story. Simply stated, we collectively are too often puppets at the hands of influence from others, namely the media. It's long been shown among studies and observations that the multiple modalities of media of a far reaching and very strong effect on the masses of people in our country. The effect that we see now is...panic. There are two ways to approach any situation, either by using emotion or logic. The emotional aspect in situations that have to deal with health related issues generally manifest as fear.
Fear is very powerful and can easily cause people to abandon their normal or familiar thought patterns. Death is scary for most. It just is. So when faced with the possibility of something causing people to fear for their lives, they will quickly abandon rational thought and seek to protect themselves. It's tough to say at this point just how dangerous this virus will be to Americans, but......through rational thought we will probably see that this is a manageable situation albeit very scary.
